Evolution Korea
The democratic system in South Korea is vulnerable to populist impulses. However, it is more stable than might be expected.
The country is seeking an entirely new model of development. A Confucian culture that emphasizes respect for ancestors as well as gendered family relations continues to influence society. There are signs of a secularist cultural trend that is emerging.
Origins
In prehistoric times the ancestors of modern Koreans were able to survive by hunting and gathering wild foods. About 10,000 years ago, they began to cultivate millet, beans, and other crops. They also raised livestock and produced furs. These tribes formed tribal states one after the other in Manchuria and on the Korean peninsula. They also established an industry of metalworking, making bronze tools and later iron tools. They traded with other states and introduced cedon paper making, block printing art styles, as well as written language to Japan.
In 2333 BCE Gojoseon came into existence in the southern region of the peninsula. The state embraced Buddhism and adopted Chinese culture including Confucian philosophy. During this time the inhabitants of Buyeo were incorporated into Gojoseon. Gojoseon had a hierarchical structure with a monarch and senior officials were drawn from the landed aristocracy, while the rest of the population was peasants. The state collected taxes from these people and sometimes even forced them to serve in the army or construct fortifications.
At the close of the period, the state of Baekje was founded by Onjo who was a prince of Goguryeo and was the son of Jumong who was the founder of Goguryeo. The new kingdom grew its territory into the southwest of the peninsula and fought with Goguryeo and China's commandos in the region. Baekje introduced elements of Confucian beliefs into its official beliefs and made the male centered filiopiety idea as a law in 1390 CE. In the name of filiopiety, fathers were accountable to their families, and had to be respected and obeyed by everyone, even their grandchildren and children.
Goryeo, a country which ruled from 918 until 1392 CE, gave the world the Hangul Alphabet based upon the patterns created by the mouth when pronouncing. This dramatically improved communication between people, and led to an explosion in the writing of Buddhist texts. Additionally, movable metallic type printing was introduced and woodblock printing was improved. In 1145 CE, the Samguk Sagi, or "History of the Three Kingdoms" was recorded for the first time.
The evolution of Korea
The Korean peninsula has been continuously inhabited since Neolithic times. Early evidence of human settlements are visible in the form of stone-lined cist graves with precious items like amazonite jewelry being buried alongside the dead. Megalithic structures, known as dolmens, and made of large stones in a single piece, are common in the country.
Gojoseon was the first state to be recognized in the first half of the 1st millennium BCE. The peninsula was later under the control of a variety of states during the Three Kingdoms Period (57 BC-635 CE) which included Baekje and Goguryeo. The northern portion of the peninsula was for a while occupied by the Balhae Kingdom, which historians do not believe to be a true Korean state.
Following the Three Kingdoms, several smaller states emerged in the Proto-Three Kingdoms period, or Several States Period (yeolgugsidae). Baekje was the most powerful of these states, was diminished by the Goguryeo's fall (676 CE) leaving only its southern regions in Manchuria and the western region around Hwanghae Bay. Eastern Buyeo, and the Gaya confederacy, thrived for a time.
The Unified Silla Kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms started to work together to expand their territories. In the final, Silla, with significant Chinese aid, conquered the other states and unified the peninsula in 935 CE.
As Korea is entering a post-crisis period, its development paradigm seems to be changing. The people who are awed by the enormous costs of the old systems advocate a comprehensive program of liberalization of capital, labor and product markets. On the other hand champions of the old system want to protect it by using nationalist sentiments and generating fear over potential job losses.
Analysts and academics are divided on the extent to which Korea's growth is influenced by these two trends. This article analyzes the five phases of Korea's evolution in terms of its political development: democratically illiberal democracies (1945-60), democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877), democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and democratic participation (2002). This article also identifies key elements that are driving these developments.

In South Korea, 26% of the population is Christian. Creationists have made progress in promoting their beliefs to this group. A survey conducted in 2009 revealed that almost one-third of respondents were against evolution. Of those, 41% claimed that there was not enough scientific evidence to support evolution 39% of respondents said that the theory was in contradiction to their religious beliefs; and 17% said it was difficult to comprehend. The level of doubt is similar to that of the United States where a similar percentage do not believe humans evolved from less advanced species of life.
In the past, the majority of the anti-evolutionist movement in Korea was focused on teaching college students and in bringing them to Christ. A significant increase in interest in creation science began in 1980, with the inauguration of a four-day seminar during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul which featured Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the main speakers. This event was attended by an impressive crowd of scientists, professors and church leaders.
The success of this event resulted in the establishment of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31 1981. The inauguration event was widely reported in national newspapers, including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo and also was well-received by the public.
KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter called CREATION, in which it published its activities and published articles on scientific evidence for creationism. It also translated a number of slides and film strips from ICR as well as a few books on creationism that were already published outside of Korea. 에볼루션 바카라 gave lectures at universities and churches throughout the country.
A KACR success was observed at KAIST University in Seoul. There, enough students were fascinated by the concept of creationism that they raised the funds and support to put up a small museum on campus with creationist fossil models and other exhibits.
In addition to its activities, KACR has published a bimonthly publication called CREATION. This magazine covers topics in the creation science. It also hosted a series of lectures by ICR staff. It also has a network of local branches that hold seminars and give talks to children in schools and other community groups.
Changes in South Korea
In the latter half of the 19th century and beginning of 20th, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The traditional hanbok, or Korean dress, gave way to miniskirts and other fashion elements from overseas. Similar to the way traditional Korean music styles were replaced by contemporary jazz and rock and roll. During this time the samulnori, or masked dance-dramas, became popular with the public. These dramatic pieces were performed to the accompaniment of shaman drummers as well as other instruments of music.
Korea's new model of development is being formed in the aftermath of the economic crisis. The primary challenge facing the new regime lies in the proper balance between state-led economic policies and market-based ones. It also involves changing the incentives monitoring and discipline policies that shaped the pre-crisis system. These issues are examined in Chapters 3 and 4.
Baekje was founded by Onjo, prince and third son of Jumong of Goguryeo was established by people from the Hangang River area, Buyeo and other areas as well as migrant workers from northern China. Baekje was one of the major regional powers in the early 4th century expanded its territory to Mahan in north and Jeollanam-do south. It was therefore in constant conflict with Goguryeo, and the Chinese commanders at the border.
The decline of Silla between the 8th and 9th centuries led to the development of powerful local factions. Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as its capital. He was the ruler of a large portion of the present-day Jeolla province and Chungcheong. Later, he moved the capital to Wansanju and became a rival of Goguryeo.
His rule was however only for a short time. Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935 and unified Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla, later incorporated Baekje into Goryeo and acted as a peaceful successor. In addition, Wang Geon introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened a centralized ruling system. This marked the end of the Three Kingdoms period. From that point, the Korean peninsula was under the control of the Goryeo Dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually developed into powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
